Throughout the course of the trail, the river after which it is named changes. As it approaches the sea, the small stream that rises on the slopes of Mount Oiz grows more lively. Little by little, the history of the local area emerges, along with its everyday stories. The character and identity of the region become clearer, and the inhabitants (among whom the Basque language remains very much alive) come into clearer focus.
