Located in the River Lea salt marsh, just a few metres from where the river flows into the sea. The mill was built in the 16th century and dismantled in 1980. Today, only a dam remains.
Marierrota was a tide mill, meaning that it was similar to a stream mill except that the mill pond (contained by a large masonry dam) would have been filled at high tide and then slowly emptied during low tide, thereby driving the mill’s machinery.
The mill has now been restored and currently houses a Visitors’ Centre. On summer weekends it is open to visitors.
